Sub-courts escapee sentenced to 20 years' jail, 24 strokes of the cane

SINGAPORE: 32-year-old Jamaluddin Salam, one of the two men who attempted to escape the Subordinate Courts, has been sentenced to 20 years' jail under the preventive detention scheme. This is the maximum sentence.
He will also get 24 strokes of the cane.
During the sentencing on Friday, Deputy Public Prosecutor Benjamin Yim told the court that an assessment report found Jamaluddin suitable for preventive detention.
Preventive detention is a regime for repeat offenders and offers no early release even for good behaviour.
The report stated that Jamaluddin was previously sentenced to 12 and a half years in jail and 24 strokes of the cane for robbery and possession of drugs.
He was released in 2006 but 14 months later, he resumed illegal activities. That was when he victimised and injured eight women, aged 62 to 83, between September 2007 and March 2008.
In light of this, DPP Yim asked for the higher end of the preventive detention sentence.
The other court escapee, 28-year-old Salman Abu Samah, was sentenced earlier this month to 12 years of corrective training and 24 strokes of the cane.
Salman had been charged with two counts of robbery as well as assaulting a police officer while trying to escape.
On June 11 this year, Jamaluddin Salam and Salman Abu Samah were brought to the Subordinate Courts to face charges of robbery with hurt.
Under the pretext of asking for water, the two men made an escape from the lock-up after assaulting two policemen.
They fled the lock-up area and took a lift to the fourth level of the Sub Courts, which led to a restricted area.
They then forced their way through a locked door and ran down a stairwell to the ground floor public area. They were subsequently arrested. - CNA/vm
