They should not have been so overly dependent on their government. From experience, they would know that the periods from end November to early February is the monsoon season and they should somehow preempt to move some of their more expensive belongings to a higher ground. Alternatively is to shift to a higher ground residential estate/property.

The Cheras areas adjacent to the large canal is infamous for flooding. Also, the surrounding areas at Jalan Ipoh near to the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) are also prone to flooding from the overflowing of the large river next to the PWTC. Areas after the Sungai Besi toll booths (towards KL) are also prone to flooding. I'm not a Malaysian, but I also know of these infamous flood prone areas. In fact, those areas parallel to the large canal from Klang to PJ to KL must be on high alert during the monsoon season. That's why they had build the SMART tunnel to divert excess water away, but unfortunately, its capacity may not be sufficient to handle the recent extraordinary heavy downpours.

I believe most of the locals would have already known these problematic areas because these are not new areas, but they are just too complacent to take the necessary precaution and don't expect (the flooding) to happen to them. So, now they will blame the government, just like Sinkies. I always believe that one has to help oneself first. The first time the mishap happened, it may be excusable for being ignorant, but not subsequent recurrences.

Ok. How about the gomen did not issue flood warning? The weather departmrnt would know of impending heavy rain.

This I can agree as it seems that their Meteorological department was sleeping on the job and wasn't alert enough this time. That's why I say don't always have to depend solely on the government, especially if you are an old timer already staying in those (flood prone) areas for many years.

I believe many of those areas never experienced flood for decades.

They do, though not every year and also not as serious as this time. The SMART tunnel was activated many times before to alleviate severe flooding.

I also ensure that the properties I bought are sitting on higher grounds, so that I have lesser worries on such acts of God.

On a side-note, I was once caught in the flood in Bangkok and it took me 6 hours in the car to travel a distance of about 30km from the old Thai airport to my hotel in downtown Bangkok. I saw the fuel meter on my agent's HONDA ACCORD dropped from full tank to half tank at the end of the trip.
