Massive blackout on North-South line: 7,200 commuters, 13 stations affected

After a power outage caused the station doors to jam shut, commuters sat waiting in the dark until they were instructed to pull the emergency handle to force the doors open so they could alight the train at Bishan station.

In a statement to STOMP, an SMRT spokesperson has indicated an interruption in power supply resulted in train services being halted between Orchard and Marsiling MRT stations. 13 stations, from Newton to Marsiling, were also affected.

STOMPer bleachedquasar was travelling on the North-South train from Braddell to Bishan station today (Aug 26) when the lights in the train went out and the vehicle stopped.

The STOMPer told STOMP:

"I was travelling in the train with the lunch time crowd to meet a friend at about 1:40pm when the train suddenly stopped and the lights went out.

"It was very hot and humid in the train and many people started fanning themselves.

"We were only delayed on the tracks for a short while and the train started to move backwards for a while.

"When we finally arrived at the station, the station doors were stuck and the train driver tried several times to get them to open.

"He finally announced to all of us to pull the red emergency handles to open the doors to exit the train.

"Everyone was evacuated from the train. The escalators leading out of Bishan station were not working and we all had to climb the stairs to leave the place."

Another STOMPer, TS, was waiting for the platform for the train travelling towards Woodlands when the blackout occurred.

The STOMPer told STOMP that the train arrived ten minutes later but commuters had to to force open the station doors manually in order to board the train.

Meanwhile, Junction 8 appeared to be having similiar problems as well.

STOMPer Mingz wrote:

"The power at Junction 8 went out for about 15mins during lunchtime today."

An SMRT spokesman said in a statement:

"On Aug 26 at about 1.30pm, an interruption in power supply resulted in train services being halted between Orchard and Marsiling MRT stations. 13 MRT stations, from Newton to Marsiling, were also affected.

"17 trains with passengers on board were unable to move. Backup emergency power was triggered for emergency lighting and ventilation in the trains. Passengers were kept informed of the disruption through announcements made by the train officers on board.

"The power supply interruption caused equipment at the affected stations, such as escalators and air-conditioning, to stop operating. Emergency lighting was available at the five underground stations to guide passengers.

"At Bishan and Braddell MRT stations, the public announcement system could not be powered on, and station staff used loudhailers to inform commuters on the platforms.

"Power was progressively restored from 1.40pm onwards, and train services resumed at about 1.45pm.

"Due to the power fault, Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) on the northbound and southbound platforms at Bishan MRT Station could not open automatically.

"Passengers from the first northbound and southbound trains that arrived at the station were instructed by train officers via on-board announcement to open the PSDs using the emergency release handles so that they can alight from the trains. The PSDs were restored at around 2.10pm.

"A total of 7,200 commuters were affected."

GOD really have eye. On the las day YOG before every one going back home leave a big bang news on Singapore. How will the Mediacock and Shifty Times cover up the story?

Years of conditioning about Pay and Pay has cause us to lose our initiatives. The train has arrived at the station, and despite the stuffiness, they are still waiting for Christmas to arrive.

Sad, we are a nation that is moving back-wards with all the rules and regulation that are too focus on fine.

There is something really wrong, i mean systematically wrong. There needs to be a major revamp in their thinking and system of doing things. There has been so many big goof ups in the past few months.

If i didn't know any better, i would have thought they are worried that not enough folks are voting for opposition. They seem to be really trying very hard to make more people vote for the opposition.

There's no responsible adult looking after Spore.

LKY is too old & re-living the past. LHL is MIA & relying on his mentors. Don't even know what GCT, WKS, etc are doing

If "leaders" pose such poor examples, those below will also follow
Why go the extra mile if you can also taichi?

We will probably never know what went wrong, they'll probably blame some lowly worker drone or "an act of god" :(

This will go on until the next screw up, and the next, and the next,...., until Spore's has a reputation for being just another 3rd world.
