Marina Bay set for biggest countdown
Organisers expect up to 300,000 revellers at New Year party

MARINA Bay is gearing up for its biggest New Year countdown party yet.

Between 250,000 and 300,000 revellers are expected to show up tomorrow night, said organisers the Urban Redevelopment Authority and the Esplanade. The crowd on most years numbers about 200,000 to 250,000.

The sixth annual event includes live music, stilt-walking and other performances. There will be film screenings and a view of fireworks all around the bay.

Now that the Helix Bridge and waterfront promenade are open, the area can hold more partygoers, who will have more vantage points from which to view the fireworks.

About 20,000 glowing 'wishing spheres' will bob in the bay, carrying written wishes from members of the community.

The countdown events are free, except for a ticketed concert by MediaCorp at The Float@Marina Bay.

For more details of countdown performances and events, see http://www.marinabaycountdown.sg

Over at Marina Barrage, radio station Power 98 FM and national water agency PUB will have a separate countdown party from 6pm to 1am on New Year's Eve.

About 1,400 police, auxiliary police and event-security officers will be deployed around the bay, a few hundred more than in previous years.

Police advise members of the public to watch their belongings in crowded areas. They also warned of thieves who spray foam on their victims to distract them so they can steal valuables or even molest them.

There will be full or partial road closures between 5pm and 2am, and revellers should take public transport to Raffles Place, Marina Bay, City Hall and Promenade MRT stations, say traffic police.

Road closure information is at http://www.onemotoring.com.sg

The last outbound trains leave from Raffles Place station at 1.57am and from HarbourFront station at 2.06am. Feeder buses from various bus interchanges will operate till late, leaving from Woodlands at 2.45am, Yishun at 2.55am and Bukit Batok at 3am.

More bus and train operating times on New Year's Eve are available at http://www.transitlink.com.sg
