A man who kept molesting his stepdaughter for three years was sentenced to two years in jail and six strokes of the cane last Friday.
He started molesting her when in 2011. She was only 12 at that time and was living with him and her mother.
At their HDB flat near Chinatown, he molested her on five occasions when his wife was out and asked her to perform indecent acts on him. He also insulted her modesty on another two.
On another occasion, he also molested her an open air carpark.
And yet, at another, after they bought dinner, he molested her at the lift lobby in their block.
This caused the girl to sink into depression. She also cut herself and kept having flashbacks of what he did to her.
This also resulted in the girl having insomnia and panic attacks, a medical report showed.
Another medical report also showed that she had even though of drinking bleach and hanging herself.
In passing the sentence, District Judge Christopher Goh said that the man's actions were "despicable" and the victim, who is now 15, will have to live with what he did to her for the rest of her life. Moreover, it is not clear that she would be able to recover.
However, the man said that he was remorseful and ashamed. He also said that he would not go near his stepdaughter after he has done his time in jail.
He also said that he wanted to "start again" with the girl's mother.
But the woman has already decided to divorce him. But she was in court with the man's father.
The man has previous convictions going back to 1999, including consuming drugs and voluntarily causing hurt.
The man pleaded to four of nine charges, with the rest taken into consideration.
He could have been jailed up to two years, fined and caned for each of his seven counts of molest.
