SINGAPORE: A 37-year-old man who smeared a four-year-old girl’s face with faeces, and punched and stepped on her thigh, was sentenced to four years’ jail and four strokes of the cane.
The man admitted to five counts of abusing his girlfriend's daughter and two counts of causing the child grievous hurt.
He also admitted to four other offences – three counts of failure to report for a urine test and one count of drug consumption.
The prosecution proceeded on six charges.
The offences were committed between September 2010 and December 2012, with the abuse offences committed late last year.
The man, who has three biological children with the victim's mother, ill-treated the girl when she was three and four years old.
Court documents stated that he smeared faeces over the victim's face after she defecated on the mattress before the mother could bring her to the toilet.
This resulted in the child eating some of her own faeces.
The man, still unhappy, then punched and stepped on the child's right thigh, causing it to fracture.
The victim also suffered a right ankle fracture after he twisted it.
The court also heard how the accused twisted and forcefully pulled the child's hands backwards, strangled her and hit her head with an umbrella.
In sentencing, District Judge Jasbendar Kaur said the victim was young and helpless so there is little reason for leniency.
An aggravating factor, she noted, was that the accused did not seek medical attention for the child.
Describing the accused as callous and cruel, the judge said the victim went through unimaginable torment.
The maximum punishment for ill-treating a child is a jail term of up to four years and a fine of S$4,000.
For causing grievous hurt, the accused could have been jailed up to 10 years, fined and caned on each count. - CNA/nd
