A man went on the wrong side of the law because he hated earning less than his wife.

Li Jin Wen (age 41) was a sales assistant who made only half as much as his wife. In a bid to prove himself by making more money, he resorted to gambling but instead ran into huge debts.

In a bid to clear his debts, Li began to sell off goods from his company and pocketed the profits himself. In late 2009, Li sold nearly $27,000 worth of goods and did the same again in early 2010 with more than $28,000 of goods. His actions were eventually discovered at a company audit in October 2010. Li was fired as a result.

Li then tried to sell his flat to repay his loans but due to a calculation error by the property agent, he ended up with nothing left after repaying his property loans. Unemployed and homeless, Li resorted to helping loansharks harass their debtors. Between last December and January this year, Li harassed various debtors ten times, with actions like splashing paint on their doors and vandalising their walls.

In at least two of the harassments, Li even brought his children along!
Once, Li was sending his children to school when he realised he had forgotten about his "errand". He brought his children, one as young as nine, to the debtor's flat and left them at a stairwell while he went to the debtor's house to splash paint and vandalise the walls.

On the same day, he went on another such errand with his seven-year-old son. He left his son in the car while he went up to a seventh floor flat at Pasir Ris Street 21 to carry out his harassment. In court, Li's wife of 15 years pleaded on his behalf by writing a letter to tell the judge that Li has been a good husband and father.

For his offences, Li was sentenced to 36 months in jail and 15 strokes of the cane.
