SINGAPORE — A man who was unhappy that the egg in his porridge was not cooked flung the scalding contents at a stall owner, giving her first and second degree burns on her face and upper torso.

Charles Law Chang Teck, 38, was jailed for 12 weeks on Monday (14 March) after earlier pleading guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon to the woman who operated her stall in Whampoa Makan Place. Law had pleaded guilty on 18 February but later unsuccessfully sought to retract the plea.

Law ordered a takeaway porridge with an egg from the victim on 1 February 2020. She packed the porridge into a clear plastic container and placed it in an orange plastic bag. Law saw that the egg was uncooked and told the victim he wanted it cooked.

The victim, 66, replied that Law should have informed her when he ordered. Law became unhappy, as he wanted to give the porridge to his young son. He told the victim that if she was not happy with working, she should not work, but the victim responded that she was not “working there but was instead the stall owner”, according to court documents.

Law then untied the plastic bag and removed the lid of the container. He flung the porridge at the victim, even though he knew that the contents were hot. The porridge landed on the victim’s face, upper chest and right upper limb.

A man queuing at the adjoining stall witnessed the confrontation and told Law to leave if he did not like the porridge. Law left. The man observed that the victim’s face was red and advised her to call the police.

The witness learned that Law was the son of another stall owner. He remained on the scene until paramedics arrived.
