Online gaming in Japan is a popular pastime, but for some it can become more of an obsession.

A recent case that has drawn online attention reports that a man stabbed another man after an argument over an online game, bringing the realm of fantasy firmly into reality.
Netizens have criticized the men for their behaviour, pointing out that men in their thirties shouldn’t be playing online games anyway…

From Yomiuri Online:

“Man Travels Goes To Gaming Opponent’s House and is Stabbed After Argument Over Online Game

By November 10, police at the Saitama Prefectural Police Station in Iwatsuki held suspect Saito Junichi (31, unemployed) on suspicion of stabbing and attempting to murder a male acquaintance (32) with a kitchen knife.

According to the station, the pair had met 12 years earlier at a game centre, and had a continuous relationship after that. On the night of November 9, whilst they were playing online games on their computers, an argument began to unfold. During the course of a game of Anime Gundam, things such as “You’re weak!”, “Useless!” and “You’re so bad!” were said over voice chat.

The man said, “I’m done with talking,” and drove to the suspect, Saito’s home. He beeped his horn from the street, and noticed the knife Saito had brought from inside the house appear in his hand before being stabbed in the abdomen.

Saito has admitted to the charges, and has made a statement to the effect of, “I had been hit by him before, so I thought he was going to fight me and stabbed him, but I didn’t intend to kill him.” The suspect confessed to his father that he had stabbed a man, and his father called 110 and said “My son has stabbed someone”. A member of Iwatsuki police went to the scene and arrested Saito.

It is suspected that at around 10:45 on the 9th, suspect Saito stabbed the man (from Kasukabe-shi in the same prefecture) once with an all-purpose kitchen knife(around 20cm in blade length).
