THEY thought he had fainted until they saw blood trickling from his back and staining his shirt.

And it was only after the police arrived at PoMo mall in Selegie Road that the workers there realised part-time Toto announcer Sitoh Woon Chee had been fatally stabbed.

How he was stabbed and why there was no commotion remains a mystery.

The 59-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 7.15pm.

Said a waiter from a nearby coffee shop, who gave his name only as Mr Johar, 39: "We didn't hear a single sound or scream. It's puzzling because our shop is less than 20m from the entrance.

"Just before 7pm, I realised that the man lying face-down had blood staining the back of his white shirt. It looked as though he had been stabbed.

"There were some security guards there but I think nobody dared to move the man."

Equally shocked was Kenneth Tan, 17, who had just finished a mixed martial arts session in a studio a floor above the murder scene.

From his vantage point, Kenneth said it was possible to see the crowds who had came to watch.

He said: "I was just relaxing when another student said a man had been stabbed downstairs.

"The six of us went down with an instructor but there was nothing much we could do.

"Somebody had said that the police had already been notified."

Witnesses said that police arrived just before 7pm and covered the body with a blue tent. They also cordoned off the surrounding area.

Mr Sitoh was part of the draw team at the Singapore Pools outlet at PoMo mall.

It was believed that he had been the announcer during yesterday's Toto draw at 6.30pm.

A Singapore Pools spokesman said that, Mr Sitoh was fatally wounded as he left work at about 6.45pmyesterday.

Due to the rain, the crowd that had come to witness the draw was "smaller than usual" said the spokesman.

The spokesman added that Mr Sitoh's family had been informed of the incident.

Family members arrived at around 8.30pm.

Some were in tears and had to be comforted by other family members and friends as the group slowly walked towards the Singapore Pools outlet.

They were also accompanied by Singapore Pools staff members.

One of the family friends, who did not want to give his name, said: "I just got to know about this shocking piece of news. It's terrible for the family."

The same man was then seen walking in and out of the Singapore Pools outlet, making calls on his mobile phone.

Meanwhile, a large crowd had gathered nearby to watch the proceedings.

When some passers-by, like a man who only gave his name as Mr Koh, learnt that the dead man was a Toto announcer, speculation started to make its rounds.

Said Mr Koh, 45, who was in the area to collect documents from his company office: "Maybe some punter lost a lot of money and was unhappy at not hearing his chosen numbers being announced.

"So it was just the dead man's luck that the punter went for him. Who knows?"
