SINGAPORE: A father of three was sentenced on Tuesday to three years' jail and eight strokes of the cane for molesting his daughter.

The 49-year-old divorcee molested the child twice in 2010; once when she was nine years old in February 2010 and once after she turned 10 in December 2010. Both offences happened in their home at Tanglin Halt Road.

A third similar charge was taken into consideration.

In mitigation, the jobless man's lawyer said his client realises the gravity of the offences. The lawyer added that the accused is very angry with himself and misses his children.

However the district judge pointed out that the molest was a "perverse" and even "heinous" act. What was really appalling, the judge said, was that the victim was his biological daughter.

He said the accused had abused the trust placed in him as a father.

She suffered in silence as her father molested her thrice in 2010, then bore the shameful secret alone until her grandmother asked her why she was afraid to go home.

After the shocking revelation on May 25, 2011, the police were notified.

When The New Paper told the 60-year-old former factory worker (above) yesterday that the man had been sentenced to three years' jail and ordered to be caned eight strokes, she was at a loss for words.

Then she said she felt the three years was too short because with good behaviour, her son-in-law would be out in two years.

She's glad, however, that the man will be caned. She said: "Serves him right! What kind of father would do that to his own flesh and blood? He deserves every stroke of the rotan (cane) for what he had done to my granddaughter."

Read the full report in The New Paper on Wednesday (June 5).
