Man raped GF's 12-year-old daughter 11 times over 2 years

SHE trusted him completely, with the guilelessness of a 12-year-old. But the man she called “Daddy”, the boyfriend of her mother, raped her 11 times over the next two years.

Only when the victim attended sexuality education classes last year did she realise what he did to her was wrong.

Yesterday, the 43-year-old man was sentenced to 26 years’ jail and 24 strokes of the cane by the High Court. He pleaded guilty to raping her on four occasions. Seven other similar offences were taken into consideration by Justice Steven Chong.

The man cannot be named because this could lead to the identity of the victim being revealed.

The court heard that the bachelor was in a relationship with the girl’s mother. The 37-year-old divorcee then moved into his flat in the eastern part of Singapore with her daughter and son in 2005.

The son, the elder child, moved out after he quarrelled with his mother and went to stay with his grandparents. The daughter, however, was soon calling the man “Daddy”.

Afraid of the dark, she would sleep with him and her mother. Some time after she turned 12 in 2007, he touched her private parts as she lay between him and her mother. When they were both alone in the flat some months later, he tried to have sex with her but stopped when she complained of pain.

She told the police that she did not tell anyone what had happened because she trusted “Daddy” and did not know what he did was wrong.

Later that same year, he raped her in the flat.

In late 2008, her mother changed jobs and moved to a rented flat in Boon Lay. Her relationship with the man ended, but the girl stayed on in the man’s house – his flat was nearer to her school – joining her mother only on weekends and during school holidays.

In August last year, the girl moved in with her mother but would return to his flat to use his computer or collect her belongings. On one such occasion, he had sex with her. She was then aged 14.

In October the same year, the mother got suspicious and questioned the victim. It was only then that the man’s acts were revealed. Confronted by the woman the next day, he confessed and surrendered to the police.

Pleading for a lenient sentence yesterday, the man claimed he was remorseful and reminded the court that he had not forced himself on the girl.

However, Justice Chong ruled that he had committed multiple acts of extreme sexual depravity over a two-year period and had inflicted severe psychological and emotional trauma upon a vulnerable victim.

Sex with a girl below the age of 16 is considered rape. If the victim is under 14, the maximum sentence is 20 years’ jail, caning and/or a fine for each instance of the crime. If she is under 16, the maximum penalty is 10 years’ jail and/or a fine.
