SINGAPORE - A teenage girl who was approached online about a job opening ended up being blackmailed by the man who contacted her.
According to the police, the 19-year-old was told by the man to perform indecent acts in front of the webcam. He then took photographs of her performing these acts without her knowledge and allegedly blackmailed her for money.
A 30-year-old man was arrested in Pasir Ris after the girl lodged a police report.
He will be charged in court on Saturday for attempted extortion. If convicted, he could be jailed between two and five years, and may also be caned.
Police say that members of public should beware of such scams and take the following precautionary measures:
-Exercise caution when befriending strangers on the internet.
-Do not agree to any request that may put you in a vulnerable position, such as performing compromising acts in front of a webcam and providing personal details to other internet users.
-Contact the police immediately if you receive any message or call from anyone claiming he/she is in some kind of trouble overseas and need you to urgently send money over.
-Inform the police if anyone tries to extort money from you.
