Man jailed for theft, animal abuse

SINGAPORE: An unemployed man was jailed two months for torturing a cat which he hung outside his house, and also for theft.
Thirty-two-year-old Lin Chuan had tied a rope around the neck of a cat, dragging it along the second floor of a block in Toa Payoh on 7 May this year.
A witness who caught him in the act said he saw the four-year-old female cat struggling to free itself before it was hung over the parapet of the block.
The dead animal was later found in a drain near the kitchen window of Lin Chuan's unit.
In addition, Lin Chuan was found guilty of stealing several compasses worth more than S$400 from "Popular" bookstore.
He was seen walking unsteadily in the bookstore on 19 March at Toa Payoh Lorong 6.
When he fell to the floor, several compasses he was hiding under his clothes also dropped, revealing his theft.
He was arrested within an hour of that discovery.
For cruelty to an animal, he could have been jailed up to a year and fined S$10,000, while for theft he could have been jailed up to seven years and fined.
