Man jailed for infecting another man with HIV

By Claire Huang | Posted: 07 March 2012 1653 hrs

SINGAPORE: A 53-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months' jail for infecting another man with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

The accused, who cannot be named, was convicted of having intercourse with the victim some time in January 2010, without informing him of the risks of contracting HIV.

Two other similar charges involving sexual activities some time in December and July 2007 were taken into consideration.

Under the Infectious Diseases Act, anyone who's HIV positive cannot engage in sexual activity unless he or she informs the partner and the other person voluntarily agrees to the risks involved.

The accused could have been jailed up to 10 years, fined up to S$50,000, or both.
