A MAN who assaulted his 11-year-old stepson over a trivial matter was jailed for 15 months on Friday. This is the second time that the 39-year-old had been convicted of hurting a child. In 2003, he was jailed two years for stepping on his eight-year-old stepson from a previous marriage.
On Friday, the odd-job labourer admitted to slapping the Primary 5 student on his face several times, punching him and stamping on the back of his head at a flat in Telok Blangah on July 20 last year. Another charge of slapping and punching his wife, the child's mother, was considered during sentencing. The couple have since divorced. The court heard that the accused scolded the victim as he was angry with him for not showing him certain letters and forms from his school
When his wife, a cleaner, advised him to speak to the boy nicely as the latter was afraid of him, the accused got more agitated. He then ordered his wife and the victim to go into the bedroom where he hit the boy. The boy's mother reported to police. Pleading for leniency, the accused said he was truly remorseful and regretted his action.
