Man jailed for acid attack

A MAN who threw hydrochloric acid at his neighbour's face was jailed for 15 months on Friday. Rio Lawrence Patrick Dutton, 47, admitted to causing hurt to Mr Basri Bakri by dangerous means at Henderson Road last Nov 13. The court heard that Mr Basri, 45, was disciplining one of his children at home when he heard Dutton shout and use vulgarities from an adjacent unit. He went over and told him not to interfere in his family matters. He also asked why Dutton had abused him. The victim asked him to come out to talk but Dutton told him to wait. Dutton then took a bottle acid and hurled it at the victim's face. The victim, who felt a burning sensation and was blinded partially, crawled back to his unit and called the police. His eyes, which were swollen, took four weeks to heal. Dutton, who has several previous convictions for offences like robbery, drug consumption and affray, could have been jailed for up to seven years or fined or caned or received any combined punishment. District Judge Jasvender Kaur said his act was very vicious, and the victim, who was partially blinded, must have been terrified.

RIO Lawrence Patrick Dutton and his neighbour, Mr Basri Bakri, had a long history of ill will. But an argument outside their Henderson Road flats last November has left one with eye problems and the other in jail. Dutton, 46, was jailed for 15 months yesterday for hurling a bottle of hydrochloric acid - usually used for removing rust from steel, household cleaning and leather processing, among other things - at Mr Basri on Nov 13 last year. The sentence was backdated to Nov 14, the date he was remanded. Describing the attack as vicious, District Judge Jasvender Kaur said the attack was aimed at the victim's eyes, and that Dutton had intended to cause serious injury. The victim must have been terrified, she added. The court heard how Mr Basri had been scolding his child when Dutton started hurling vulgarities at him from next door.
