SINGAPORE: A 31-year-old man was sentenced to 21 months' jail on Tuesday for cheating a pawnshop chain of some S$80,000.

The court heard that Leow Wenbin, who is unemployed, had committed the offences at various pawnshops belonging to the Maxi-Cash Group between 2009 and 2010.

Seven charges were proceeded on and 14 others were taken into consideration.

According to court documents, Leow had pawned items that included gold chains and bracelets.

Tests later revealed that the items were heavily coated with gold and not fully made of gold.

Investigations also showed that Leow had provided the personal particulars of his friend, Mr Lee Hao Jun, as a guarantor for the pawn transactions, even though Mr Lee had neither provided these particulars nor agreed to stand as a guarantor.

The transactions could not have taken place if Leow had not been able to provide the particulars of a guarantor.

The court also heard that Leow has not made any restitution.
