An unemployed man would impersonate a National Environment Agency (NEA) officer on anti-mosquito breeding rounds to steal from three homes. Sivamani Marimuthu, 46, was on Thursday jailed 18 months.

He had pleaded guilty to theft, housebreaking and impersonating a NEA officer.

In passing the sentence, District Judge Low Wee Ping agreed with Deputy Public Prosecutor Allison Phua that the value of the items stolen - at $27,462 - was rather large.

The court also noted that the police recovered only $7,800 of the loot from a goldsmith in Little India.

The offences were all committed between April and September last year.
