STOMPer kepala pusing pusing was extremely disturbed by media reports of a girl being assaulted by a male passenger on board SBS service 30 for a full 30 minutes. While the assault was taking place, neither the passengers nor the bus captain intervened.
According to the media reports, the female victim boarded the bus at West Coast Road and went to the upper deck. A male passenger sat beside her and kept inching closer.
This made the victim very uncomfortable, so she asked the male passenger to “give her some space”. This request for the man to move away apparently enraged him, and he started to hit her head and stomach.
The attack lasted for 30 minutes, during which time not a single person came to her aid, or told the man off.
The victim’s sister, Ms Zhang, expressed her displeasure with the way the incident was handled by the bus captain.
She says her sister wanted to fight back, but was unable to defend herself. The attacker had grabbed her wrist and was hitting her head and stomach. According to Ms Zhang, her sister’s head, neck and arms are still bruised from the attack.
Her sister had to endure the unprovoked attack until a 22-year-old 'Male Knight" from the lower deck noticed the commotion from above, and asked the bus captain to stop the bus and seek help from the police.
The bus captain refused, saying that he had orders from the command centre for him to continue driving.
Ms Zhang wonders why the passengers did not have the compassion to help her sister, and why the bus captain compromised the safety of her sister and the other passengers by driving on without alerting the police.
Her sister is still traumatized by the incident.
SBS Transit says it is currently investigating the incident.
