Man fined S$3,000 for buying stolen milk powder

SINGAPORE: A retiree was on Thursday fined S$3,000 for buying stolen milk powder.
59-year-old Teo Gim Cheng admitted to buying 20 tins of stolen milk powder worth more than S$800, in April 2012 from his acquaintance, Gopal Krisnan M Tangka Valu.
Investigations showed that Gopal Krishnan had abetted the theft of the milk powder with two others.
Teo, who used to run a grocery store, knew that the goods were stolen. However, he bought the tins of milk powder and later resold them.
In mitigation, the defence said Teo had to retire due to his multiple health conditions.
The court heard that Teo was trying to kill time by selling the milk powder. Teo also made full restitution to the supermarkets involved in the case.
During sentencing, District Judge Lim Tse Haw said he hoped that Teo has learnt his lesson and fined him S$3,000. - CNA/ac
