SINGAPORE - A 46-year-old man has been fined $18,000 for operating an illegal waste disposal facility on a plot of vacant land along Sungei Lanchar off Tractor Road.

National Environment Agency (NEA) had received information that the accused was illegally operating a waste disposal facility on vacant land next to a park connector along Sungei Lanchar.

He is believed to have charged lorry drivers $150 for the disposal of one lorry load of earth mixed with construction debris.

He was charged for operating a waste disposal facility without a licence.

He could have been fined up to $50,000 or jailed up to 12 months or both.

Repeat offenders face a higher maximum fine of S$100,000 and imprisonment for a term of between one month and a year.

NEA said that illegal dumping of waste at a public place is a serious offence as it causes pollution and public health hazards.

The number of illegal dumping cases has dropped from 160 in year 2000 to 55 in 2014.

The public can call NEA's 24 hour Call Centre at 1800-2255-632 to report illegal dumping activity.
