Man charged with robbing elderly

A MAN was charged in a district court on Thursday with robbery with hurt and snatch theft. Sin Chor Hwee, 44, allegedly robbed Mr Taib Sahat, 91, of his wallet containing $350 and his identity card, and also hit him on the head and shoulder.
The alleged incident took place in a lift of a block of flats in Chai Chee Avenue on Sept 12. Sin is also accused of snatching the handbag of 65-year-old Ng Mah Siok outside a lift lobby at Chai Chee Avenue on Sept 23. Bedok police mounted various stake-outs at various locations and arrested him on Tuesday. Sin was remanded for psychiatric assessment.
He will return to court on Oct 14. If convicted of robbery with hurt, he faces a jail term of up to 20 years plus at least 12 strokes of the cane. The maximum punishment for snatch theft is seven years' jail and caning.
