SINGAPORE : A contract supervisor with a manpower supply company was charged in court on Thursday with giving false information to the National Environment Agency (NEA).
Fifty-three-year-old Sinnayah Suppiah, who was originally accused of littering, had submitted an appeal to the NEA on July 10 last year.
In the appeal, it was alleged that he had falsely accused two NEA enforcement officers of asking for a bribe from him. The officers were said to have asked S$100 from Sinnayah in return for not issuing him a Notice to Attend Court.
It was believed the officers had earlier spotted Sinnayah smoking at a bus stop near Block 442, Pasir Ris Drive 6 on June 30 last year. He then allegedly threw his cigarette butt into a nearby drain.
Upon seeing this, both enforcement officers approached Sinnayah and issued him the notice. Sinnayah is claiming trial and told the court that he will not be engaging a counsel.
His pre-trial conference will be held on April 29. Sinnayah is currently out on bail. If convicted of giving false information, he could be jailed up to a year, fined a maximum of S$10,000 or both.
