Man bit officer's palm, jailed

<!-- by line --> By Elena Chong

AN UNEMPLOYED man bit an arresting officer on the palm when the latter caught up with him after a brief chase. Senior Staff Sergeant Saravanan Ramalingam, 31, and his colleague were at Block 88 Redhill Close to change the memory cards for the CCTV cameras when they heard the lift door open and someone walking up to the eighth floor. They identified themselves and wanted to check Kwer Chin Han, 29, who demanded to see their warrant cards. He fled but Senior Staff Sergeant Saravanan managed to catch up with him at the ground floor. Kwer put up a violent struggle and bit the arresting officer on the left palm, causing it to bleed. Kwer was arrested. He had earlier scrawled graffiti on the fifth floor staircase of the block on behalf of an unlicensed moneylender. He was about to do the same on the eighth floor when the officers spotted him. Earlier that day, he had splashed paint on flats at Marsiling, Woodlands, Tanglin Halt and Commonwealth Crescent and scrawled writings on the walls. On Wednesday, he was jailed a total of four years and ordered to be given five strokes of the cane for the various offences, including drug possession and consumption. He pleaded guilty.
