Man attempts to jump to his death after murdering ex-wife

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- A man was rescued by police on National Highway 3 yesterday for trying to commit suicide after murdering his ex-wife.

The man, surnamed Lee, was found trying to vault over the shoulder barrier of the highway after he jumped out of a car driven by a family member. As there was an approximately 30-meter drop beyond the barrier near which Lee stood, police and firefighters were careful not to alarm him as they tried to coax the man back to the highway.

The police eventually wrestled Lee back to the shoulder of the road when he was not paying attention and sitting astride roadside barriers.

Before his bid to end his life, Lee allegedly stabbed his ex-wife after a heated argument when he was giving her a ride to Shenkeng, New Taipei City on Friday. The attack left the woman with multiple deep wounds on her chest and neck. Although Lee drove his ex-wife to the hospital right after stabbing her, the woman did not survive.

According to police, who arrested Lee after rescuing him from the highway, Lee claimed that he had been subject to episodes of depression and was prone to fights with his ex-wife after the couple's divorce. Lee argued with his ex-wife over education issues related to their children when he accompanied her on a shopping trip, and accidentally stabbed her to death when he brandished a knife to threaten her, according to the police. Lee stressed that he had no intention of murdering her.

After interrogation, Lee will be charged with homicide and other yet-to-be-determined crimes, the police said.
