SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 44-year-old man believed to have stolen a cashcard and a mobile phone from a lorry at the car park of Block 84 Redhill Lane.

On Jan 13 at about 11.06am, police were informed by a 34-year-old delivery driver that his mobile phone - valued at about $800 - and cash card containing stored value of approximately $30 had been stolen.

The victim had earlier parked his unlocked lorry at the said location and proceeded to the nearby shops to deliver goods. When he returned, he saw an unidentified man removing the cash card and mobile phone before fleeing from the car park.

The victim immediately gave chase and managed to detain him briefly. Following a struggle, the suspect managed to break free and flee. The victim was only able to recover his mobile phone during the struggle.

From CCTV footage, officers from Clementi Police Division managed to establish the identity of the suspect. He was subsequently arrested at Lengkok Bahru on Jan 14.

The suspect will be charged in court on Jan 16 for an offence of Theft from vehicle under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, which carries a maximum punishment of three years' imprisonment, or fine, or both.

The police advise vehicle owners to secure windows and doors of their vehicles at all times. Valuables such as laptops, mobile phones, cash cards, briefcases or handbags should not be left unattended or exposed inside the vehicle, even for a short while. Cash cards should also be removed from In-Vehicle Units.
