A file photo provided by the police shows guns and tools to steal ATMs that Hanoi police seized from Tran Dang Dai.
Hanoi police have arrested a man suspected of stealing more than US$65,600 from an ATM in 2011 and planning to rob two more before the Lunar New Year holiday.
Tran Dang Dai, 28, was arrested on January 27 at a house he rented under a false name.
Police raided the house and seized two guns, 28 cartridges and tools to break locks.
Dai confessed he was also planning to steal money from two ATMs on Hanoi’s Nguyen Chi Thanh Street, saying each of these machines may have at least VND4 billion.
In late 2011, Dai and three other men, who are still at large, broke into an Agribank branch in the neighboring Hai Duong Province.
They tied up a guard before using a welding device to break an ATM and stealing VND1.4 billion (VND65,600).
The group was also accused of stealing money from two other ATMs earlier.
Police are still searching for the other suspects.
