SINGAPORE - The police have arrested a 50-year-old man for providing false contact information to obtain loans from illegal moneylenders.
Officers arrested the suspect on Nov 7 at about 5pm after follow-up investigations
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect did not report the change of his address after moving out from his previous unit and had used his old address to obtain loans from loansharks.
Investigations are ongoing.
Under Section 28C of Moneylenders Act, Chapter 188, anyone who gives any contact information which he knows or believes to be false to an unlicensed moneylender can be jailed up to 12 months.
Under the National Registration Act, anyone who does not report a change of address can be fined up to $5,000 or jailed up to five years, or both.
Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Keok Tong San commended his officers for their policing work.
He said the police will come down hard on unscrupulous persons who use false contact information to obtain loans from loansharks, causing inconvenience and anguish to innocent parties.
