SINGAPORE: A 17-year-old girl on a bus to Bukit Batok Bus Interchange had a rude shock when she saw a man doing an obscene act on the public bus.

But she managed to keep cool and alerted the bus captain of the SMRT Bus 106, who then called the police.

Police said they received a call on March 31 at about 5.58pm from an SMRT staff stationed at the Bukit Batok Bus Interchange about the male passenger's lewd act.

Police officers from the Jurong Police Division and the Public Transport Security Command responded to the incident and arrested the 40-year-old male suspect.

Investigation against the male suspect is ongoing.

Anyone convicted of doing any obscene act in a public place can be jailed up three months and fined.

Commander of Jurong Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Wilson Lim, commended the victim for retaining her composure and reporting the case.

He also expressed his appreciation to the actions of the bus captain, who together with the victim, identified the subject and detained him until the arrival of the police officers.

He added that the police will take firm action against persons responsible for such acts, to ensure the safety of commuters on Singapore's public transport network. - CNA/ms
