AFTER quarrelling with his girlfriend at her workplace, a man cycled to the women's shelter where she was staying and asked for her two-month-old baby. The baby girl was not his, but Sarle Steepan Kolundu, 44, was registered as the infant's biological father and he was allowed to take her out. Filled with anger against his 24-year-old girlfriend, Sarle Steepan took it out on the baby, roughing her up until she bled profusely from her mouth. A passerby who saw the baby - who had by then turned bluish and was motionless - alerted the women's shelter, who then called the ambulance.
The infant died in hospital from skull fractures. Sarle Steepan initially faced a murder charge, which carries the death penalty. On Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He faces a life term or up to 20 years' jail and can also be caned or fined. The case will resume on Monday for prosecutors to argue on sentence and for his lawyer to make his mitigation plea for leniency.
