Pursuit.
A 34-year-old man will be charged in court on Feb. 26 after he allegedly evaded a police roadblock and drove dangerously during an hour-long pursuit in the early hours of Feb. 17.
According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), officers were conducting a roadblock along Airport Road towards the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) at about 2:45am when a red car failed to stop and instead sped through the checkpoint.
Hour-long pursuit across north-east Singapore
Officers gave chase, during which the driver apparently ran multiple red lights and drove in a dangerous manner.
The pursuit lasted about an hour before the driver abandoned the vehicle near Edgedale Plains in Punggol and fled on foot.
Members of the public reportedly saw a red car being pursued along Hougang Street 12 and Rivervale Drive.
Several police vehicles were subsequently seen in the vicinity of Block 122A Edgedale Plains.
Arrest after CCTV-assisted investigations
Officers from the traffic police established the identity of the driver through ground inquiries and the use of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.
He was arrested on Feb. 24.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had been driving a deregistered vehicle fitted with a cloned number plate.
He was also allegedly driving without a valid licence and without insurance coverage.
The abandoned car has since been seized by the authorities.
Multiple charges
The man is expected to face several charges in court, including evasion of a police roadblock, dangerous driving, driving without a valid licence, using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage, using a deregistered vehicle, using a vehicle without a licence and using a false number plate.
If convicted of evading a police roadblock, he could face a fine of up to S$10,000, imprisonment of up to seven years, or both.
Dangerous driving carries a penalty of up to 12 months’ imprisonment, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both, along with mandatory disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.
