SINGAPORE - A man, 29, thought he could avoid paying the replacement fee for losing his NRIC by lodging a police report and claiming to be a victim of snatch theft. Now he is in the soup and investigated for making a false report instead.

Police are investigating a 29-year-old man for making a false report by claiming that he was a victim of a Snatch Theft.
On 25 March 2014 at about 11.27am, the 29-year-old man lodged a police report, stating that his wallet was snatched away by an unknown suspect in the vicinity of Canberra Road. He claimed that the stolen wallet contained his NRIC, ATM card and cash amounting to $50.
Upon receipt of report, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division conducted extensive enquiries and follow up actions. Through follow up investigations and with the aid of CCTV footages, it was established that the man had made a false report of Snatch Theft. He had lodged the false report to avoid paying the replacement fee for his NRIC, which he had misplaced.
Investigations against the subject are on-going. Anyone who is convicted for giving any information which he knows to be false to a public servant shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to $5,000, or with both.
Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Keok Tong San commended his officers' investigative acumen in establishing the credibility of the report. He emphasised the dire consequences of making such untrue reports and wasting police resources.
