Malaysian blogger praised PAP’s system of
‘head-hunting’ their leaders

Influential Malaysian blogger Raja Petra Kamarrudin or RPK as he is
fondly known by, has lavished generous praises on the ‘talent-scouting’
system of the PAP regime in a critique of Malaysia’s UMNO
titled ‘Suck your way up the ladder‘
“Singapore has a strict criteria and a high-powered
committee vets the potential candidates. The candidates are
then interviewed by people such as the founding father of Singapore.
And by the time the final list is decided they would have gone through
every potential leader with a fine-tooth comb and counted every hair
on their backside. Nothing gets past them,” he wrote.
RPK added that the stringent selection of Singapore’s leaders by
the PAP regime is the ’secret’ of our ’success’.
As a foreigner, RPK may be forgiven for not having a complete
understanding of how the PAP system ‘works’.
One reason why the PAP has to ‘head-hunt’ for potential
candidates to stand for elections under its banner is because
of the repressive political climate it created and perpetuated
in Singapore which discouraged young aspiring Singaporeans
from joining politics.
Though the method may appear sound, it is not perfect as
even Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong admitted that many
of the party’s candidates in the 2006 elections are not his ‘first choice’.
With the PAP being a monolithic party completely under
the control of an old man, few real talented people will be
keen to join it with the end result that there is a dearth
of creative and independent thinking in the PAP today.
