Dog trainer Maznah Yusof is being investigated for "causing disharmony on grounds of religion", lawyer Latheefa Koya said, an offence punishable by up to five years in jail in the Muslim-majority country.

The video shot to mark the Islamic holiday shows Maznah bathing and feeding three dogs as the Muslim call to prayer sounds in the background.

Dogs are viewed as unclean in Islam and contact with them is frowned upon.

Eid al-Fitr, which will be celebrated next week, is a festival marking the end of the annual fasting month of Ramadan and is the most important Muslim holiday.

Maznah, 38, was quoted by online media as saying she never meant to insult Islam with the video, which was first posted in 2010.

But she also insisted Islam does not forbid keeping dogs.

"I love my religion ... my religion has taught me about the importance of cleanliness," she said.

AFP was not able to reach Maznah directly, and a police spokesman declined to comment.

"There was no intention on her part to insult any religion," Latheefa, her lawyer, told AFP. "This is ridiculous ... it's an overkill."

Multi-ethnic Malaysia is known for its relatively moderate version of Islam, but conservatives frequently cry foul when a line is deemed to have been crossed.

A non-Muslim couple were charged with sedition and other offences on July 18 after they posted a Ramadan greeting on Facebook which showed them eating pork.

Pigs are also considered unclean by Islam, and pork consumption is forbidden.

The ethnic Chinese duo, who had sparked outrage last year with a sexually explicit blog, pleaded not guilty. Sedition carries up to three years in jail.

About 60 per cent of Malaysia's 28 million people are Muslim ethnic Malays, but the country also has sizeable ethnic Chinese and Indian communities.

PETALING JAYA: The woman who made a controversial video celebrating Hari Raya with her pet dogs has been arrested by the police and is being held in Bukit Aman.

Her lawyer Latheefa Koya said that Maznah Mohd Yusof, 38, was being investigated under section 298A of the Penal Code which deals with causing disharmony on grounds of religion.

Latheefa, however, said she did not know what offence Maznah, who is a dog trainer, actually committed.

She was also unsure how long Maznah would remain in custody.

"I hope to see her before they take any statements from her," she said.

Calls to Maznah by the Star Online went unanswered.

Maznah, who is also known as Chetz, is in the middle of an social media storm after a video of her spending her Hari Raya with her dogs three years ago was uploaded on YouTube on Monday.

The 104-second clip, entitled 'Video Menghina Islam 1 Hari di Hari Raya' shows Chetz near a mosque with three dogs with the Takbir Raya (a special prayer recited during the first day of Hari Raya) playing in the background.

She is also seen washing their paws and feeding them kuih raya (raya cookies).

The video has been viewed more than 52,000 times so far until 6pm today.

It also received many comments from YouTube users who blasted her for the video.

PETALING JAYA: Maznah Mohd Yusof, the woman who was featured in a controversial video celebrating Hari Raya with her dogs, will be brought to the Magistrate's court in Segamat for a hearing on the possible extension of her remand order.

Her lawyer Latheefa Koya said that Maznah was brought to Segamat very early this morning as that was where the first police report was lodged against her.

"This is absolutely ridiculous and doesn't make sense. They can conduct the investigations in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. They are just doing this to harass her," Latheefa said adding that she met Maznah in Bukit Aman at 12.30am today.

Maznah who is also known as Chetz was arrested on Wednesday and was initially in custody in Bukit Aman.

Latheefa said that Maznah had been cooperating with the police and should be charged if indeed there really was a case for her to answer.

She added that there was a lawyer in Segamat who would be challenging the remand.

Maznah has been at the centre of a social media storm after a video of her celebrating Hari Raya with her dogs three years ago was uploaded to YouTube on Monday.

The 104-second clip, titled "Video Menghina Islam 1 Hari di Hari Raya" shows Maznah walking near a mosque with three dogs with the Takbir Raya (a special takbir recited on the first day of Hari Raya) playing in the background. She is also seen washing their paws and feeding them cookies.

SEGAMAT: Maznah Mohd Yusof, the dog trainer who caused a stir by posting a video of her celebrating Hari Raya with her dogs, was released Friday on a court bond.

Her lawyer G. Visvanathan Nair said court registrar Mohd Anuar Ostadi made the judgment around 12.20pm.

"Maznah will be set free and will be required to present herself if needed in future pertaining to the case.

"If she fails to be present in court, she will have to pay a fine of RM10,000," he said when contacted.

He added that the bond was awarded under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

"She has now been taken to the police station to retrieve her belongings and should be released soon," he said.

Maznah, who is also known as Chetz, has been at the centre of a social media storm after a video of her celebrating Hari Raya with her dogs three years ago was uploaded to YouTube on Monday.

She was arrested on Wednesday and was initially in custody in Bukit Aman in Kuala Lumpur, before being brought here and remanded.

Meanwhile, lawyer Latheefa Koya, who is also representing Maznah, said the release condition involving the court bond was uncommon.

She questioned why the police had applied for a bond under Section 118 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which is for witnesses and complainants.

"It is very strange. That process cannot be applied on her because she's a suspect. If they are going to charge anybody, it's her," said Latheefa.

Latheefa explained that a suspect would normally be released unconditionally or with a police bail.

"If they want her to give a statement, they can call her anytime. She has admitted to being the woman behind the video. Or if they think there's an offence, charge her," she said.

Maznah was investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code, which deals with causing disharmony on grounds of religion.
