PUTRAJAYA: Some 5,000 evacuation centres have been identified nationwide that can provide relief to 1.4 million people in the big floods expected this year.
At the first sign of disaster, more than 28,000 government personnel will swing into action using land, air and water vehicles to move people and aids to victims.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Tuesday that supply depots had been established in five regions, with stocks being replenished every three days, while 477 forward bases had been set up.
He said that boats, trucks, four-wheel-drives, helicopters, water pumps, power-generating machinery and other equipment for handling the floods had been well maintained.
“We have placed them at strategic locations close to high-risk areas. More severe flooding has been forecast than the disaster last year, but we are better prepared this time round,” he said after chairing a special meeting Tuesday on preparing for the natural disaster.
The Meteorological Department had reported that a number of states in the peninsula and Sabah and Sarawak would receive 20% to 40% more rainfall than normal between this month and March.
The department had also forecast that the high tide would occur on Dec 25 and Jan 23.
