The only person to be blamed for Malaysia LACK of progress - a possible great Nation, with far natural resources, is ex PM Mahathir Mohamad - a Polynesian of mix descent.
He was a fiery firebrand for Malay RIGHTS in the 1950s. His heart is in the right place, even after graduating from British run Uni of Malaya, but his failure is to take a closer ANTHROPOLOGICAL look into the history of fellow Polynesians like him in Malaya and Indonesia living in the rich and lush fertile valleys of S.E.Asia.

Being educated, he presumed that ALL Polynesians like him would aspire to greatness and empathy like him - a medical doctor trained. And worse when he promulgated the foolish concept of Malay Rights and Bumi policies since the 50s even till today.
FOOLISH because Malays and Indonesians are living in the lands of plenty. Work so hard for what? - is the often heard catchphrase. As Malays, they have ALL access to opportunities in starting life - subsidies and even assurance to Uni to obtain degrees, even if it is an Islamic college that teaches nothing of STEM, which the Malays waved as a 'UNI DEGREES', unaware of HOW MORONIC they are in the presence of Worldwide evolution and competition to put food on the tables for oneself and loved ones.....
He was the one that hindered our great Founding Fathers whom had tried to uplift LIVES of every Human - Polynesian Malays/Indons, Chinese, Indians, etc, whom had fled to this rich fertile valley in S.E Asia, when Singapore was part of the Malaya Federation.
So much, so much, progress and evolution had been lost over the past few decades....sigh....and its FLIRTATION for political dominance with the brutal and cruel Radical Islamist Arabs whom only demands obedience, set laws that saw NO progress and elevation of lives to the Polynesian Malays and Indons......
NO ethnic group reigns supreme. It takes ALL kinds of Humans, to convince them to work on a specific goal of VALUES that Humanity cherishes, will Progress and Evolution occurs, as the gift of Intelligence lays not in ANY Ethnic race, as proven by Nobel Prizes awarded, or the successfully run Nations where peace and Rule of Law is adhered.
USA is an example. USA was not made up of blue eyed blonds, but a massed migration of others from different Nations, to gel and WORK TOGETHER in peace to progress USA to what it is today, under democratic rule and institutions.
Now that the current Malaysian Leaders had realized their errors, may CCP China rulers have mercy on them.....
