The general in charge of the US Air Force’s nuclear missiles has been sacked.
A spokesman said there had been a “loss of trust and confidence” in Maj Gen Michael Carey, adding that his removal was due to his “behaviour during a temporary duty assignment”.
Officials insisted that the sacking was not linked to the operation of the US nuclear arsenal which was safe.
Maj Gen Carey was responsible for 450 intercontinental ballistic missiles at three bases across the United States.
On Wednesday the American Navy announced an admiral overseeing nuclear weapons forces had been sacked due to illegal gambling activities.
