<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I HOPE the Ministry of Manpower can be more stringent on medical requirements for maids coming to Singapore.
I took on a transfer maid who cleared the medical test to work in Singapore. After three days with us, we realised she could not see clearly. We took her to an optician and were told her glasses were of much lower power than she needed.
Two months later, she had a bad toothache. We took her to the dentist and were told she had very bad oral hygiene and three teeth had to be extracted over three visits.
Into her ninth month with us, she fell very sick. After visiting the clinic, we told her to rest. But she kept coughing and when she spat blood, we asked her about her health. That was when she revealed that she was asthmatic and had been a tuberculosis (TB) patient until she was cleared three years back.
We immediately took her to hospital. The doctor who attended to her gave her an appointment to see a lung specialist and a neurosurgeon and sent her home. She could face a TB relapse and we have three young children, aged 17 months to four years.
I urge the authorities to ensure that thorough medical checks are done for maids. Employer like us should not end up in such dire situations when the reason to have a maid is to secure extra help.
