A YOUNG Indonesian maid was charged in court on Friday with trying to murder a seven-year-old girl. Kumaeroh, 24, is accused of using a kitchen knife to stab the girl on the back and a chopper to cut her wrists at a flat in Serangoon at about 12.30pm on Wednesday. The petite woman was represented by Mr Mohamed Muzammil Mohamed, who has been engaged by the Indonesian Embassy to act for her. The maid, wearing a grey and red longitudinal striped T-shirt, was arrested two days ago. She is being remanded for three weeks for psychiatric assessment, and will be back on Oct 16. If convicted, she can be jailed for life or a term which may extend to 20 years and liable to a fine.

A 25-YEAR-OLD Indonesian maid initially facing a maximum life term for trying to murder her employer's daughter now faces a reduced charge.

Kumaeroh, who allegedly stabbed the seven-year-old and slashed the girl's wrists, now faces a lesser charge of attempted culpable homicide, which carries a maximum of 15 years' jail.

She is accused of stabbing the girl several times on the abdomen and back with a kitchen knife, then slashing the child's wrists with a chopper at about noon on Sept 23, 2009.

The attack was said to have taken place in the flat where they lived. The girl cannot be named as she is a minor.

The woman was first charged with attempted murder on Sept 25, 2009.

On Tuesday, at a preliminary inquiry, which is held to determine if there are sufficient grounds for an accused person to be tried in the High Court, a magistrate's court heard that the maid had indicated that she would be pleading guilty to the reduced charge.
