Soccer world cup for robots kicks off in Singapore
Singapore- As the world's best soccer teams aim for glory in South Africa, the annual soccer world cup for robots kicked off in Singapore on Sunday.
Nearly 500 teams from research institutions from more than 40 countries are taking part in the five-day RoboCup 2010, with soccer the main competition, organizers said in a statement.
The robots are to compete in various categories, depending on size and configuration.
Held for the first time in 1997, the RoboCup aims to foster research in artificial intelligence and intelligent robotics, said the Switzerland-based international RoboCup Federation.
Its long-term vision is to see "a team of fully autonomous humanoid robot soccer players" beat the human champions in the World Cup by 2050.
