A machine gun was found hidden in the ceiling panels of a maintenance closet at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Thursday. The unloaded gun was discovered in Terminal 1 by a worker who was running cable through the ceiling of a management office. Investigators are trying to determine who the gun belongs to, how it ended up in the closet, and whether it was used in the commission of any crimes. No ammunition was found on site or nearby.

The area where the gun was discovered was not past the security screening area. There was no word on how the gun got there, CBS 2 reported. The Port Authority released the following statement on Thursday: 'At 10:10 a.m. today, a contractor who was running cable through the ceiling of a management office at Terminal 1 at JFK found a case in a storage closet containing a MAC-11, a subcompact machine pistol.

'The office, which is locked and accessible only to a few people, is located outside the terminal’s secure area. 'The contractor immediately called PAPD, who responded and took possession of the weapon. PAPD are investigating whether the weapon is operable and whether it was ever used in the commission of a crime.

'The weapon was unloaded, there was no ammo nearby.'The firearm, which is capable of discharging 32 rounds in less than two seconds, was found in a plastic gun case. A source told the New York Daily News that the office in the terminal where the gun was found hasn’t been upgraded or renovated since the late 1990s, so the gun could have been hidden there for years.
