Xiaomi's first notebook looks just like a MacBook Air

Xiaomi has already been accused of copying Apple's designs for its phones, tablets and even its website. Now it's about to be accused of copying Apple's notebook design.

Xiaomi's new notebook, leaked by Gizmochina, bears an uncanny resemblance to Apple's iconic MacBook Air.

The leaked image from Gizmochina shows an aluminium notebook with the MacBook Air's distinct wedge shape and black chiclet keys. The trackpad, back hinge, port placement and web camera are all also very similar to Apple's design.

The only discernible differences are a small Xiaomi logo directly below the display and an orange power button. It's unknown if there will be a light up Xiaomi logo on the lid of the laptop.

The notebook will supposedly have a 15-inch Full HD display and run on an Intel Haswell i7-4500u processor with 2 x 8 GB dual channel memory. As for software, it's apparently going to run a version of Linux that has been customised by Xiaomi.

As with all Xiaomi products, it looks to be dirt cheap, with prices starting at about S$640 - around half the price of a real MacBook Air.

Intel is encouraging PC companies to copy the Macbook Air

Before you decide to get one of these clones better read http://www.infoworld.com/article/26...ing---ultrabook--laptops-are-all-hot-air.html

Intel $300m Ultrabook Fund will encourage MacBook Air rivals

Intel has announced that its Intel Capital investment arm will be using a $300m Ultrabook Fund to encourage the development of innovative technologies that will improve the MacBook Air rivaling ultraportable segment. Expected to be dolled out within the next 3-4 years, the cash will go to "companies building hardware and software technologies focused on enhancing how people interact with Ultrabooks, achieving all-day usage through longer battery life, enabling innovative physical designs and improved storage capacity."

Intel launched the ultrabook segment back at Computex 2011, though many felt it was more of a branding exercise than a truly new category. The differentiation from ultraportable notebooks as we already know them is still one of boundaries rather than anything else - ultrabooks must use Intel's processors and tick various other categories that the company has established - but at least with some financial backing there's the possibility that it's more than just a marketing-speak label.

That investment is much needed, according to sources in the manufacturing and supply chains, which have accused Intel of potentially undermining the ultrabook concept with its own greed. The chip company's own components amount to roughly a third of a bill-of-materials (BOM), which on its own - without actual production costs or any profit margins factored in - is expected to reach as high as $710. The knock-on effect could be pricing that exceeds Intel's targeted $1,000 ceiling.

Subsidies from Intel have been tipped before, though this particular investment round looks to be more of a development fund than outright greenback encouragement. Meanwhile, Intel itself will be working on Haswell, its planned 2013 silicon products, which will supposedly use half the power of current chips.

how come no new chipset like i8, i9 or i11? instead moving laterally with M chip which is a souped up duocore.

laptop prices r still rocket high. only improvement seems to be FHD, QHD and no move towards UHD.

I'm still using an old i7 860 chip from 2009. I don't feel a need to update my hw because the performance is good enough.

My Macbook also has an i7 processor. The processor is actually overkill for what I do, but I bought the unit intending to keep it for another 3 to 5 years. Maybe by that time Apple will be using an AX processor on it's Macbook computers. I think Intel is focusing on reducing the power requirements for their processors. If they ignore the performance aspect Apple might replace the Intel processor & put in their own AX processors.

Apple is rumoured to release a super Ipad in 2015. It could be a newer generation of Maclight Pros:confused:

Chinks are blatant copycats......what else is new?
Protected by chink govt......expect xiaomi owner to become next jack ma.

I'm not sure why everyone's crazy about Xiaomi phones. I played with one at a shop and was underwhelmed by it. There are better options if you want a budget phone at a similar price range.

Just because something is selling like hotcakes in China doesn't mean it holds true for the rest of the world. Conversely, if something sells well in America it does not necessarily guarantee success outside America.

it's definitely a less pesky fone then most of the expensive useless farkup fone like gayphone

If I can find a 2nd hand Sony Ericsson W810 I will go back to using it. Nice compact phone with a keyboard

Have tried the newer phones but I just can't get the hang of a virtual keyboard & I don't need many of new features.

Yes xiaomi is a fucked up phone.
I bought into the hype and was one of the first to get one when it came here. Waste of time.
Their powerbanks are much better and of better quality then what is on the market though
