Singapore traffic authorities in call for license plate recognition
Two leading transport bodies in Singapore have called for license plate recognition (LPR) systems to be installed around the country.
Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued a statement with the Traffic Police for the technology to be installed with the aim of identifying bus lane and illegal U-turn offenders.
The Singaporean government has welcomed the calls for the automatic license plate recognition system, saying that innovation will be able to aid the traffic enforcement laws.
Lim Hwee Hua, Singapore's minister for finance and transport, has said that the country will install LPR on a trial basis, as specialised innovation for the country's roads is important.
"The use of new recognition technology will improve compliance by motorists [which leads] to greater safety and smoother traffic flows for all," she said.
"In this technical trial, companies will develop License Plate Recognition Solutions customised for Singapore’s needs."
Lim Hwee Hua was speaking at the launch of a traffic message channel, which will provide a method of delivering traffic information to drivers, in Singapore.
