Low visibility forces Indon President Jokowi to cancel Jambi haze inspection trip

JAMBI (Indonesia) — President Joko Widodo was forced to cancel a trip to monitor efforts to quell haze-causing forest fires, as visibility was still too low today (Sept 25) to safely fly the presidential jet to Jambi’s Sultan Thaha International Airport.

Air pollution indexes have moved into hazardous territory in large parts of Indonesia and neighbouring countries, and the haze has already forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights in the region.

Schools were also forced to close in Singapore today.

Mr Joko Widodo was scheduled to visit Muarojambi district together with Forestry and Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya, but visibility in Jambi city was just 200-300m this morning.

The president had also been slated to visit a community health centre treating residents suffering from respiratory ailments as a result of the smoke.

Mr Henrizal, a spokesman for the Jambi provincial government, said it was still unclear if the presidential visit would be rescheduled.

“The visit of the president cannot go ahead today, Friday, as thick smoke continues to blanket Jambi,” he said. “Possibly the president will visit the sites of the forest and wildfires in Jambi after the smoke clears.” JAKARTA GLOBE

In Batam there are many people who their own cars & motorcycles. Same thing in Jakarta, where car ownership is common. The indonesians who visit Spore are not poor. There are plenty of very wealthy Indonesians out there, just look at who are going to Mount Elizabeth, shopping in Orchard Rd.

If you go to Jakarta you will find many large money changers doing a thriving business exchanging US$. Euro$,... with the rupiah.
Even Indonesians know that the rupiah is weak & that is why they store their wealth in various currencies. It is common for them to have foreign savings account.
