Burhanpur woman killed for refusing marriage and conversion to Islam:Man allegedly slits her throat; victim's family demands demolition of accused’s house

Bhagyashree Namdev (Deceased), Shiekh Raees (Accused)
A 35-year-old Hindu woman was brutally murdered in Navara village of the Nepanagar area late Friday night after she allegedly refused to the marriage proposal and conversion to Islam in Burhanpur.
The accused, Sheikh Raees (42), son of Sheikh Asif, allegedly attacked Bhagyashree Namdev Dhanuk with a knife following a dispute, leaving her with multiple injuries and a fatal neck wound. She died on the spot.
Accused arrested, case registered under SC/ST Act
The police have arrested the accused and registered a case under IPC sections for murder and the SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act.
According to the woman’s family, Raees had been harassing Bhagyashree for a long time, pressuring her to marry him and convert to Islam. Her sister Subhadra said they had approached the police just hours before the attack.
On Saturday, the family staged a protest by placing the body on the road, demanding the demolition of the accused’s house and shop. Supported by members of Hindu organizations, they also demanded action against others allegedly involved in the murder.

Family members and Hindu organizations protested by placing the body on the road.
Rituals delayed for hours amid protests
The body was brought to the village after the postmortem around 4 PM. However, the last rites were withheld for over two hours.
SP Devendra Patidar and ASP A.S. Kanesh visited the scene along with SDM Bhagirath Vakhala and SDOP Nirbhay Singh Alawa to pacify the situation. Nepanagar MLA Manju Dadu and Balai community president Manoj Parmar assured the family of strict action.
Policemen line attached
Even after initial assurances, the family and community members protested again at Navara Square. They demanded suspension of Navara outpost constables Wasim Qureshi and Iqbal Khan for alleged negligence.
Police officials later confirmed the two were attached to the line, and encroachments on government land linked to the accused would be demolished. Following this, the cremation took place at 6:50 PM.

Officers continued to persuade the family members for a long time.
Conversion allegations surface
Bhagyashree’s sister alleged that Raees was pressuring her for religious conversion and harassing her regularly. She also demanded action against three other individuals allegedly involved and the negligent police staff.
Terming it a 'love jihad' case, leaders of Bajrang Dal, VHP, Hindu Jagran Manch, and Balai community demanded justice and financial compensation.
Manoj Parmar from Indore stated that under SC/ST Act provisions, a compensation of ₹4.12 lakh must be paid at the time of FIR and again upon charge sheet filing. He alleged that the accused was earlier released after bribing the local constables.
Accused linked to prior controversies
Shops in Nepanagar and Navara were shut down on Saturday as Hindu groups called for a bandh. Raees, who runs a dairy in Matapur market, reportedly has a history of controversial activities. His wife has left him, and a maintenance case is pending.
