IPOH: A lorry driver who was about to park his vehicle on the roadside in front of SK Tarcisian Convent in Lim Garden here, received a rude shock when left front tyre got stuck in a 3m-deep sinkhole.

Teoh Wooi Boon, 59, said he was parking the lorry near the entrance of the school at Persiaran Tun Abdul Razak at around 10.50am Tuesday when he felt a jolt.

"The lorry suddenly jolted downwards and I hit my abdomen against the steering wheel," he said, adding that the sinkhole, which was 5m wide, had a shallow pool of water in it.

The sinkhole appeared soon after a big part of Jalan Raja Perempuan Muzwin near Sibilin here collapsed last week, cutting off the main access road to Taman Rishah.

The cave-in was believed to have been due to heavy downpours over the weekend.

An Ipoh City Council spokesman said he would bring up the matter to the authorities.

"We will hold a meeting with the Minerals and Geoscience Department to investigate this matter," he said.

Buntong assemblyman A. Sivasubramaniam, who visited the site, said he was told cracks had also started to develop on the school building.

"The authorities must look into the matter as soon as possible to ensure the safety of buildings and public infrastructure," he added.
