SINGAPORE: A 33-year-old man believed to be involved in loansharking activities was arrested this morning at 3.25am while police officers were conducting a roadblock.
Police said they spotted him alighting from a taxi just before the roadblock point in Tampines.
Officers proceeded to perform a check on the suspect and found on him a mobile phone containing loanshark-related messages.
The suspect was then placed under arrest for suspected involvement in loansharking activities and the mobile phone was seized for investigations.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect is believed to have assisted the loansharks in their illegal businesses by performing electronic transactions.
Investigations against the suspect are ongoing.
First-time offenders found guilty of assisting in the carrying on of the business of an unlicensed moneylender may be fined between $30,000 and $300,000, or face a maximum jail term of four years and shall also be liable to up to six strokes of the cane.
