Cabby sentenced to jail for blocking ambulance
By Joycelyn Wong
March 18, 2010

A cabby was sentenced to two weeks jail for obstructing a public servant from discharging his duties.

Tan Teck San, 46, parked his taxi half a metre behind an ambulance at Marina Square around noon on 20 Feb last year.

The paramedics had been dispatched to a clinic there because a patient was feeling breathless.

While they could open the rear doors of the ambulance, they could not move the patient from the stretcher into the ambulance.

When one of the paramedics asked the cabby to shift his vehicle, Tan said he couldn't because of another vehicle parked behind his, and added: "So what (if) you got (a) call?"

He then asked the paramedics to move their ambulance forward.

Tan is now out on bail pending his appeal against his sentence. For obstructing a public servant, Tan could have been jailed three months and fined $2,500.

I don't understand this case.
If there was really a vehicle behind his taxi, how could he move it?
Shouldn't the ambulance verify that and move their ambulance, if proven to be true?

This typical Shit Times reporting. After reading the article u remain confused about the facts. I think what happened was the ambulance arrived first. The paras went in to get the patient, came out, and saw the taxi had parked behind them. As they had difficulty maneuvring the patient, they asked the taxi driver to move. The taxi driver should not have parked so close behind the ambulance anyway. The ambulance should have kept his lights flashing, warning other motorists that it was on duty. Probably the patient was some elite, and the taxi driver kenna tekaned because he was an asshole. jail sentence however is too much. Fine would have been more appropriate, or suspension of license. After all this is essentially a parking violation, its not like it was a drink driving case or something more serious.

Agree with you and ST should use opportunity to inform public what IS the law regadring ambulances. Are we supposed to stop when we hear sound of ambulance, how much clearance should we give a parked ambulance. Must the light be on before we give the clearance?

They failed to mention who was the numbnuts judge and the cock sucking prosecutor. I want to see who these wasters of tax payer money are. The TP just has to givethis taxi driver a parking fine. No heed to go to court. I suppose the cabby should be lucky he did not get caned. After all, this is sinkiepore.

bloody ambulance driver shd be jailed too for wasting time...he could have just moved his ambulance slightly forward and saved precious minutes from arguing with the taxi driver...

another failed product of the MOE system... use some common sense lah, if it's your mother in the ambulance, how would you want other drivers to react to the ambulance? park and block the rear doors so it cannot open??

next you'll be asking for guidelines on how many times a day to shit.

and if you're still wondering, yes, you stop/pull over/give way/to the emergency vehicle that is blaring its siren up your backside.

2 weeks' imprisonment is excessive, although still within the law. The punishment does not fit the crime. Common sense will suggest that a fine is more than enough to send the message across. :(
