SINGAPORE – Three people, including a pregnant woman, were taken to hospital after a false ceiling in an al fresco dining area at Orchard Road’s Liat Towers collapsed in the afternoon of Sept 12.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it received a call for assistance at 541 Orchard Road at about 4pm.

Two people were taken to Singapore General Hospital and another person was taken to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

In response to queries, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said the structural integrity of the building was unaffected, after it was alerted and conducted an inspection.

“Preliminary findings show that the incident is localised and likely due to improper installation of the suspended ceiling,” said a BCA spokesperson.

The spokesperson added that BCA has instructed the building owner to appoint a Qualified Person to advise on necessary precautions to remove danger, and to recommend permanent fixes.

When contacted, a representative of the building’s management said the collapsed false ceiling was installed by the tenant.

“This is an isolated incident. We are unable to comment further, as investigations are ongoing,” she said.

Photos circulating on Facebook on Sept 12 show the collapsed structure in an area outside acai shop Swirl Lover. Pieces of cement debris can be seen strewn across the floor, some distance away.

Swirl Lover is located on the first floor of Liat Towers, in between fast-food chain Shake Shack and Starbucks.

When The Straits Times arrived at the scene at about 6pm, a police cordon had been put up around the collapsed structure, and the acai shop was closed. Several police officers were seen walking around the area.

An employee at Swirl Lover declined to be interviewed.

A Shake Shack employee, who wanted to be known only as Mr Ku, said he was at the restaurant’s drink stand when the incident happened.

“There was a pregnant woman who was caught underneath, and she was pulled out by her husband,” he said. “I think there was also another girl who had scratches on her face.”

Several customers at Starbucks also rushed forward to help, he added.

NUS graduate student Lumos Tan was eating at Shake Shack when he heard a crash at about 4pm.

“I heard a loud crash and went outside to see what had happened,” said the 28-year-old, adding that he saw a few people trying to lift pieces of the ceiling.

Ms Czandrya Cheong, 17, said more than 10 people helped to lift the false ceiling to allow those trapped underneath to escape.

“It was quite heavy, but there were enough of us to lift a corner of the ceiling so that they could crawl out. Some also volunteered to crawl underneath to retrieve the victims’ personal belongings.”

She added that the pregnant woman was subsequently taken to hospital.

Student Denzel Tear, 18, was one of the passers-by who came forward to help.

Mr Tear, who had been studying at Starbucks since 9am, recalled that there were about six people trapped underneath the structure.

“I saw an international school student around my age crying and bleeding from the nose. I think she hit her head as well,” he said.

On the evening of Sept 12, employees from massage and spa chain Natureland, located directly above Swirl Lover, were seen holding signs to divert their customers as the staircase to the spa was cordoned off.

Natureland manager Claudia Tan said the outlet lost about 15 per cent of its business due to the collapsed ceiling.

“Our peak hours are from 4pm to 7pm, and we lost quite a few walk-in customers because the entrance to our shop was cordoned off,” she added.

very jinxed. that same location sexperienced “ponding”, flood waters that looked like latte (definitely not from starbucks), loss of business from frequent closures, etc. even a fengshui sexpert will not be able to mitigate the negative vibes that occur at that shithole.
